Gabby started her business New Age Caravans on a lease block within Northpoint Enterprise Park in 2009. Since then the business has grown from strength to strength, and New Age Caravans have continued expand within Northpoint to accommodate their operations, which now includes over 160 staff.

Gabby Montagnese — New Age Caravans
Victorian Entrepreneur

Gabby Montagnese is one of a kind – managing director and owner of the fastest-growing Australian caravan manufacturing business that is leading the sector with its contemporary designs. Eight years as a product manager for a multinational electricity provider gave Gabby practical knowledge in IT, organisational change, business improvements and marketing that she transferred to Epping – based New Age Caravans in 2009. With the industry experiencing historically low building rates in 2010, Gabby revolutionised the industry by creating a modern range that has seen New Age Caravans become Australia’s biggest manufacturer of full-sized caravans, employing 160 people. Keeping current with the latest technology and construction methods has helped Gabby to expand facilities and hire locally at a time when manufacturing generally is uncertain. No stranger to the outdoors herself, Gabby heads to the coast as often as she possibly can.

“I firmly believe that access to the caravanning lifestyle helps families and couples come closer together and instils the ideals of community back into their lives.”

Congratulations Gabby for your well deserved position on this impressive list of successful female business leaders. The Northpoint Enterprise Park commend your achievements.

A New Age In Australian Manufacturing

New Age Caravans is located in Melbourne’s northern suburb of Epping, within Northpoint Enterprise Park. Under the guidance of Director Ms Gabby Montagnese, New Age Caravans has created an Australian manufacturing success story.  In just six years the business has built a brand, reputation and production output to become one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of Caravans and Recreational Vehicles (RVs).

Since its inception in 2009, New Age Caravans has experienced astounding growth. Their number of employees alone has increased 420% to the current level of 130 staff. New Age Caravans predict annual growth of 10-15% to continue.

As one of the earliest businesses to establish themselves at Northpoint Enterprise Park, New Age Caravans has gone from strength to strength. They attribute some of the success to their strategic choice when choosing a location from which to build their business.

NAC_GabbyNew Age Caravans Director Ms Gabby Montagnese says

“One of our key early strategies was to locate our facilities in this part of Melbourne. 90% of our workforce lives locally and to achieve our goals and plans we needed continued and expanding access to an available, skilled work force. This location is attractive for our employees as they can achieve a good work life balance. From a business perspective it allows us to contribute to the local community, supporting our local supply network and greater community as a whole.”

New Age Caravans stands out as a shining success story in manufacturing, which is a platform that Australia has recently found difficult to compete on by global standards. Australia’s recent decision to pull out of the car manufacturing industry is a key example of this. Contrary to this New Age Caravans has carved out a vibrant and growing business as an Australian manufacturer.

Working in New Age Caravans favour is its choice of industry. The caravanning industry is strong in Australia as demonstrated by the Australian Recreational Vehicle (RV) production statistics released by the Caravan Industry Association of Australia. New RV production statistics for September show a year on year growth of 9.8 percent, compared to September 2013, and overall production for 2014 is 5.1 percent higher than it was in 2013. Since 2008, RV registrations have increased by 21.6 percent (528,869 up from 414,469).

One of the challenges for New Age Caravans on the international stage is that the Australian Design Rules for the construction of RV’s for Australian conditions are some of the toughest in the world. Australia’s sometimes tough environment and conditions are unique by world standards so products specifically manufactured to this standard are unquestionably the best products for use when travelling in Australia. New Age Caravans is thriving in this environment currently producing 1,000 caravans per year made up of 11 models with 35 possible layouts.

Ms Montagnese attributes New Age Caravan’s ongoing success and growth in part to its willingness to embrace new technologies and invest in a world class, state of the art facility, but also to the availability of strongly skilled local workers.

“This region is home to many multi-national manufacturing firms, which in turn has given rise to a highly skilled local workforce to choose from.”

“When we decided to start up New Age Caravans we knew that we wanted to be in Melbourne’s North somewhere. It was not until we found Northpoint Enterprise Park that we knew exactly where we wanted to be. This Business Park ticked all our boxes. We established strong alliances with the Northpoint team to develop land packages that suited both our current requirements and what we predicted for our future growth. This relationship has certainly been instrumental in allowing our business to move forward and grow.”

New Age at Northpoint

Northpoint Enterprise Park resident New Age Caravans is busily expanding operations, having started construction on their new, modern manufacturing facility. This new development is located alongside New Age Caravan’s current Dealership Showroom on busy Cooper Street, Epping. The new Office/Factory building and expanded facilities for New Age Caravans is in response to their rapidly growing business in Australia’s caravan market. The expansion of New Age Caravans is positive for Northpoint Enterprise Park and the City of Whittlesea with the Company’s employment figures in this location swelling to over 100.

Age Caravan’s Owners Joe and Gabby Barrasso attribute the company’s outstanding growth to a number of factors including; the company’s use of superior manufacturing technologies; having a customer focused approach that includes a high degree of product customisation; creating a modern on-trend product; and having a Showroom located in a high visibility position attracting attention of a lot of passing traffic as well as being easy to access for all current and potential clients.
